HEALTH BENEFITS

Rooibos tea is low in harmful tannin, a substance which adversely affects the body's metabolism by decreasing the absorption of iron and protein. The clean, aromatic flavour of Rooibos can safely be enjoyed in unlimited quantities throughout the day, with no harmful side-effects.

Rooibos helps delay the aging process! The aging of our bodies is caused by toxic compounds called free radicals which are produced as a by-product of normal cell function. These free radicals attack healthy cells. Over lifetime this damage contributes to aging and the immune system weakens. Recently, Japanese scientists have found that Rooibos tea contains a mimic of the enzyme Super Oxide Dismutase (S.O.D.), an antioxidant which attacks the free radicals and limits their damaging effects.

South African scientists have deduced that the reason why Rooibos is anti-allergic, is that it contains quercetin, an "anti-spasmodic" substance ("spasmodic" substances cause allergies). Quercetin is found in quantities between 1,4 and 1,7mg per 150ml of the tea.
But what truly bears testimony to its ability, is the simple fact that it's taken by allergy sufferers all over the world, and it works.

. The quercetin in Rooibos Tea that combats so many allergic symptoms for babies, has a lot to offer people beyond infancy too. Here are a few of the allergic symptoms the tea is most commonly known to alleviate, along with some suggested application methods:

    • Acne - the Teenager's Plague
The following face-masque method has proven a saviour to many an acne sufferer: take half a cup of strong, plain Rooibos tea (fairly warm); add half a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar; add 2 teaspoons of oatmeal (NB - if you're allergic to oatmeal, use a gluten-free flour); allow the mixture to cool until it's lukewarm; apply it over your face and neck; lie down and relax for about 15 minutes; rinse off with lukewarm plain Rooibos tea, then press to dry.
    • Tired, Smarting, Puffy or Sensitive Eyes
Those who read and/or study a lot will find this hint particularly valuable. Every morning, on getting up, either rinse out your eyes in an eyeglass filled with lukewarm plain Rooibos tea, or wipe out your eyes with a face-cloth dipped in plain Rooibos tea (this second method will provide instant relief from sore eyes of anykind).
    • Sinus Problems
When taken as a beverage, Rooibos tea will alleviate sneezing and an itchy nose. Itchy eyes can be relieved with a facecloth using the second method mentioned above, whenever symptoms arise.
    • Hayfever and Running Noses
In addition to the method described hereafter, it also helps during a hayfever spell to cut foods like wheat products, milk and eggs from your diet: take lukewarm Rooibos tea in the cup of your hands; slowly draw the liquid into your sinuses; hold it for a few seconds, then release it, and gently blow your nose.
    • Itchy or burning skin
After a cleansing bath, wipe off your affected skin with a face-cloth moistened in Rooibos tea; press gently to dry (NB - do not rub, as this will only make the itching/burning worse)
    • Eczema
If you suffer from this problem, bathing the affected skin areas in Rooibos tea can provide soothing relief.

Rooibos helps to relieve stomach ulcers, nausea, constipation, and heartburn.

Rooibos makes a great thirst-quencher and sport drink. Because of its mineral content of iron, potassium, zinc, manganese and sodium, it restores the body's equilibrium after strenuous exercise.

Rooibos is very versatile! Drink it hot or cold, with or without milk, sugar or honey. Add lemon or mix it with fruit juices for a lovely blend. Rooibos tea is also used in cooking and baking. It replaces the liquid content in recipes for soups, marinades, sauces, stews and cakes for added flavour and nutrition.

And Rooibos tastes divine! It is less bitter than most teas.

ANTIOXIDANTS

The role of oxygen free radicals
Our bodies use oxygen to convert food items such as fat and sugar into energy, in this process, oxygen is converted to water, and each water molecule normally takes up four electrons. However, some oxygen may escape before the conversion is complete, and this results in about 2% of the oxygen having an electron deficit. These particles are called free radicals or super oxide radicals. They may also be formed in the human body through other processes, such as air pollution, smoking and exposure to radiation. Free oxygen radicals are extremely reactive and can cause damage to body proteins and fats, and also to the hereditary material of cells, known as DNA. The oxygen free radical (super oxide radical) can be converted to even more damaging radicals by a chain reaction.

Fortunately our bodies have some protective mechanisms against the harmful effects of free oxygen radicals and other even more powerful radicals such as the so-called peroxides and hydroxyl radicals. The protective mechanisms are enzymes and antioxidants.

Why is an antioxidant necessary in the human diet?
Free radicals (the same as Reactive Oxygen Species ROS) are chemically highly reactive molecules that indiscriminately attack human tissue and cause all kinds of problems, for example ageing, cancer, heart and arterial diseases, etc. The body copes with these by means of SOD (super oxide dismutase enzyme).
During ageing or poor health SOD levels drop, and it is then that the diet should be rich in the antioxidants in order to help the body to cope with free radicals.
The flavonoids and tannins in Rooibos are proven antioxidants. Thus, apart from the pleasant taste, a cup of Rooibos is also an essential part of any diet supplementary to foods or beverages.

Antioxidants prevent damage
The chain reaction of damage in the human body caused by free radicals can be interrupted by antioxidants. Vitamin E, which is found in vegetable oils, is the most effective antioxidant. It stops the chain reaction by becoming a radical itself, but since it is stable, no further damage is done. Other well known antioxidants are vitamin C and carotenoids, found in fruit and vegetables. Finally, there are the flavonoids, which occur in abundance in Rooibos.

Flavonoids and free radicals
Flavonoids are powerful antioxidants, and have more antioxidant activity than vitamin C. Laboratory studies have shown that the antioxidant activity of Rooibos is more or less similar to that of black tea and green tea. The flavonoids of Rooibos are now well known. The major one is aspalathin, found only in Rooibos and nowhere else. Several other flavonoids have been identified, including nothofagin, vitexdn, lsovitex, orietin, isoorientin, luteolin and quercetin. In the process of fermentation, aspalathin may be converted to other substances but these possibly have even better antioxidant properties than aspalathin itself. Much research remains to be done on Rooibos flavonoids, but it is reasonable to assume that the health promoting properties are partly due to the antioxidant effects of the flavonoids.

ROOIBOS SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

In March 1996 Dr. Charlene Marais obtained a doctor's degree in chemistry from the University of the Free State, South Africa, for which she has dedicated her research to Rooibos tea. The most important conclusion one can reach from her study is that Rooibos is definitely beneficial in certain areas and harmless.

During the past few years, Rooibos tea has become the favourite beverage of thousands of people across the globe. Most of these people are convinced or believe that the drink is beneficial to their health. Some of these presumptions are now scientifically supported by Dr. Marais academically founded research.

Her study entailed the isolation of metabolites from Rooibos tea and the subsequent consultation of literature to determine the physiological activities of the isolated compounds. "We observed the fermentation process and then substantiated the findings in a biomimetic model," she says. She was supported and aided throughout by her supervisor, Dr. Kobus Steenkamp and supervisor Prof. Daneel Ferreira, head of the Chemistry Department at the University of the Free State.
"We actually observed what occurs during the processing of Rooibos tea," she says.

Skin Ailments

Dr. Marais says certain compounds, altogether about 30, were identified - of which the activities corresponded with the qualities and characteristics generally attributed to Rooibos tea.

After the discovery in 1968 that Rooibos had an anti-spasmodic activity, the theory was verified in 1974. She could once again substantiate this quality through her research. Furthermore, ascorbic acid - an antioxidant - was discovered in the tea in 1983, adding yet more substance to the perfection of Rooibos as a healthy and beneficial beverage to the consumer.

Based on these findings, Japanese researchers investigated the connection between certain dermatological ailments which are associated with oxidation reactions and monitored the influence of Rooibos tea on these conditions. One of the most obvious reactions observed, was that people with warts sometimes had relief from drinking Rooibos tea. Likewise, people with eczema and acne also had relief from drinking the tea as well as topical application. It was found that it also had a positive effect on certain individuals suffering from photosensitive dermatitis.

Antioxidant

"With regard to anti-oxidative qualities, we and other researchers isolated a number of compounds like ascorbic acid, various carboxylic acids, quercetin, luteolin, isoquercetrin and rutin," Dr. Marais says. Antioxidants probably have the potential of inhibiting and even preventing certain illnesses and conditions - like strokes, cancer and heart attacks.

She says the low concentrations of catechin that was found in Rooibos, could possibly also contribute to the prevention of tooth decay.

Some of the qualities of Rooibos which had previously not been taken note of are, inter alia, its antiasthmatic properties which were observed in certain of the isolated compounds, mainly certain terpenoids previously isolated by Japanese researchers.

Dr. Marais says the compound (+)-pinitol, which is known to be an expectorant, was found to inhibit diabetes when tested on mice. Furthermore, several of the carboxylic acids which were isolated, are known to have the potential of being anti-hepatotoxic and could therefore inhibit damage to the liver, hence useful in the treatment of a hangover.

Rutin, another compound which was identified, is used in medication and has so-called vitamin P activity which reinforces and stabilizes blood vessels. Prof. Ferreira says on the strength of the outcome of his department's Rooibos project, their expertise can now be applied to the benefit of the economy. He says while Rooibos tea is regarded as a health drink by many, the modern and developed First World person also has the need to know why something is beneficial and healthy. "Substantiated, basic research like ours is essential for the verification of assumtions," he says.
